Those of you who have been around SEO for a few years would of heard of the term Page Rank Sculpting. For those of you who haven’t - PR Sculpting is basically the process of restricting the flow of page rank around your website, so that important pages get more and other less important pages gets none.
For example, there are certain pages on your website that you don’t really want page rank flowing too; privacy policy and contact page to name two. There’s no point having a PR5 privacy policy, that’s not going to do your profit any good at all.
PR sculpting is when you stop any page rank flowing to these pages from other links within your website (add a rel=”nofollow” to the html link pointing at said webpage). Therefore, leaving your most important pages with all the Link Love, i.e your product pages or product reviews pages.
If none of that makes any sense then check out this page for a more detailed explanation
With that said, according to Matt Cutts during a Q&A session with Danny Sullivan last week at SMX Advanced in Seattle, Google are no longer re-directing the flow of page rank to your other more important pages.
WHAT! I hear you scream…
So where does all this Link love go? Well according to Matt Cutts “You can almost think of it as just evaporating.”
So it seems that one of the more advanced SEO techniques that we have come to know and love is now dead in the water. Well that just leaves the other 3,457 things you’ve got to do to get your pages ranked high in Google
However, I wouldn’t go removing all those nofollows just yet until we get a more official announcement from the Big Daddy itself.
