According to statistics, over 24 million people work from home. With today’s technology, it’s easy to see how many people can  work from the comfort of their own home and for themselves. The Internet has spawned many types of businesses that everyday people can participate in, and effectively make money at home. While having certain skills certainly helps, there are some activities that almost anyone can participate in.

Certain professions are conducive to working at home. Freelancers like graphics artists, writer and web designers, for example, only need a computer and an Internet connect and they can work anywhere. But what about those who don’t have such skills? How can they make money on the Internet?

A popular way to make money at home online is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing seeks to drive traffic (internet visitors) to a certain website, using various means. The neat thing about the Internet, unlike TV or radio, is people can get to the information they need, when they want it. With traditional media, you have to wait until the program you want comes on and you can only get what big media companies serve to you. Hopefully, you’ll watch a few commercials and purchase some of the products you see. The Internet changes all of that. You can go to any website you want, whenever you want.

A person’s surfing time and eyeballs have become a precious commodity on the Internet, especially for businesses seeking a market to sell their products or services to.  This is where affiliate marketing comes in. An advertiser would then pay an affiliate to promote their business. An affiliate will have to find a  way to drive those eyeballs to certain sites and help convince them to spend money on a product or service. This usually involves some sort of promotion via a website, blog or going out to public forums and try to convince consumers that a certain product is worth their hard-earned cash.

Now that you know the basics, how does one go about this?

First, you must choose a topic or niche you’d like to work on. While this may seem easy, it’s  not always so simple. Your topic should be popular enough that you’ll have a big audience, but not too popular that you’ll have too much competition. However, with that said competition it’s totally feasible to enter big markets like make money online and just carve out your own little piece of it. You’ll also have to consider if this niche is something you’re interested in though otherwise it may not be fun for you.

Next, you’ll have to join some sort of affiliate program. It’ll be almost impossible for a beginner to contact a company like HP or Epson, for example, and ask if you can become their affiliate. Affiliate programs will also have to necessary tools to keep track of your performance. Popluar affiliate networks that a lot of affiliates start off with are Clickbank or Commission Junction.

Finally, it’s time to get to work and find a marketing strategy that works for you.  Generally, building a website or blog that promotes your niche market is the first thing to do. Claim a domain name that is easy to remember and has something to do with your niche, preferably containing your keywords. But just because you build it, doesn’t mean people will instantly go to your site. You must promote and market your site. The more visitors you have, the more potential you have to make more money.

Is Affiliate Marketing right for me?

Affiliate marketing is not for everyone though, it’s not some get-rich-quick scheme, even though some people (mostly affiliate programs) advertise it that way. You will have to learn the basics and you will have to work hard to make a lot of money online. Many people get discouraged and are convinced that affiliate marketing is a kind of make a ton of money quick scam, when in it’s so not. Many legitimate business use this method to drive up their web traffic and sales. But with hard work and determination, anyone can make a full-time business out of affiliate marketing, make money from home and finally quit their day job and be their own boss.
